Made for the US Navy by Zenith during World War II, Vail was a Chicago-based company that upgraded the original Swiss Movement to US Navy Specifications. They did this by increasing the jewels from 6 to 15; and adding the Power Reserve indicator at the top of the dial.
Made of wood, brass, aluminum, and steel, this early Zenith Ship Deck Clock is in EXCELLENT used condition! It features a 12 hour display, along with a second hand dial at the 6 o’clock position. It is 100% functional, and features the wording, “Zenith Chronometer” in the center of the dial. Though not indicated, this in a 8-day movement. Apart from a bit of discoloration at the 8″o’clock position, the dial is near perfect! It comes complete in the ORIGINAL wood box, and mounted on a gimbaled ring. All the original glass is intact, as well as the VERY RARE brass data plates on the front! Various marks and scratches throughout, due to the age. All the numbers are MATCHING and indicate the serial number 202280 on both the box, movement, and bottom of case. Production date is indicated as 1940. MUCH rarer than the Waltham deck clocks, it is a VERY RARE item, perfect for any collection, or display!
