WW2 German Wehrmacht – M31 ALUMINUM CANTEEN & STRAPS – FSS 8 39 – ALL MATCHING!

The M31 canteen was based on the M1893 and M1907 canteen which were used throughout WW1.  These were originally manufactured in aluminum, but as aluminum was required for use in other equipment (aircraft, for example), they were then re-designed to be manufactured in steel. For tropical climates, the canteen was made of pressed wood with canvas straps.

Made of aluminum, leather, and steel, this canteen set is in EXCELLENT condition for it’s age. Some marks and wear throughout, due to the age, but nothing that detracts. All items are marked wit the manufacture code and date, “FSS 8 39” (though a bit distorted on the felt cover). A couple of small moth holes in the felt, but they are not too noticeable. These is the early version with the addition of the smaller leather strap that goes around the neck of the canteen. This type was also used throughout the war by paramilitary units. Would make a SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
