Description
You are bidding on an EXCELLENT used example of a 100% ORIGINAL German Kriegsmarine Officer Visor Cap (Schirmmütze für Offizier)! This was brought back by a US Veteran, however I do not have any further history.
Visor caps were a standard issue for all personnel. Officers and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own caps and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance. They could choose to purchase their caps from the armed forces clothing depots or privately purchase caps of higher quality. The Kriegsmarine regulations differed from the Heer and Luftwaffe, in that enlisted personnel did not wear visor caps (although all ranks from senior NCO’s upward did, and regulations dictated the form of dress they were to be worn with based on the individual’s rank). The shape of the Kriegsmarine visor caps also differed by having slightly larger, overlapping, relaxed styled crowns. They also did not feature braided chin cords to denote rank as they proved impractical for actual usage, so the leather chinstraps were worn instead. In order to distinguish between ranks, various colors of visor trim were produced for Company Grade; Field Grade; and Flag Officers. The standard visors were Navy Blue, however White topped visor caps were to be worn during the summer months in conjunction with the dress uniforms. The white visors were also commonly worn by Officers serving as the Captain of a vessel when at sea. The visors were available with either a permanent, non-detachable top; or a detachable top as an optional item (in both colors, so the officer could change out between the tops).
Made of a Dark Navy Blue doeskin wool, this Officer Visor Cap is in EXCELLENT condition considering it’s age! As it was combat-worn, there are some slight marks, wear, stains and holes (2 tiny moth holes)…but nothing that detracts. It features a dark cloth center band. The center has a fully embroidered National Kriegsmarine Eagle, as well as a second pattern wreath and cockade. Visor features a gold leaf pattern. It has the standard leather chinstrap, which is secured by two gold-colored Navy Buttons featuring and Anchor on each. The interior of the cap is fully lined in blue rayon fabric. Some slight sweat marks/stains as you can see in the photos. Manufacture label is missing. The leather sweatband is also fully intact. No size markings, but I would guess that it is a size 59. I have shown the EXACT type in use by a U-Boat Officer in the last photos. Would make a PERFECT addition to any collection or display! Please email me if you need additional photos or information. |
