You are bidding on an EXCELLENT example of a WW2 British RAF Contactor Master Type 2 IFF Timing Unit, 10A/10994@ This specialized electrical timing device formed part of the RAF’s early aircraft identification equipment and was utilized in conjunction with radio systems carried by the Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire, and others!
The Contactor Master Type 2 was employed as part of the RAF’s “Pipsqueak” identification system, a method used to assist ground stations in tracking and identifying friendly aircraft. Prior to the widespread adoption of modern IFF systems, Pipsqueak transmitted timed radio signals that enabled direction-finding stations to determine the location of RAF aircraft. The system saw extensive use during the early years of the war and was carried aboard numerous RAF aircraft including fighters such as the Spitfire and Hurricane. Worked in conjunction with the TR9-D Radio System.
Made of steel, brass, and aluminum…and housed within its original aircraft mounting case, this is a SUPERB example! Though it features some slight marks and wear from storage, it still retains 95% of its original finish throughout…and comes complete with its original cable, contactor assembly, connector plug, aircraft mounting case, lid, and internal padding! All Air Ministry markings remain clearly visible, including additional markings found on the securing latches. The housing is clearly marked “Contactor Master Type 2, 10A/10994“, and serial number “S12593“. The instruction plate remains fully intact and clearly reads “Replace Lid Immediately After Winding.” Mechanically the unit is fully functional, winds correctly, and continues to run and tick as intended, although it has not been electrically tested. No cracks, repairs, corrosion, missing parts, or damage! Unlike many surviving examples, this unit remains 100% complete and retains the original aircraft mounting case in which it was installed during service. A scarce and highly desirable piece of RAF communications equipment, PERFECT for any advanced aviation, Spitfire, Hurricane, or RAF collection!
