Description
Intended for use with the GEW 98 (Gewehr 98) rifle, the original first pattern M1884/98 Bayonets were conversions of the earlier S 71/84 bayonet. The second pattern, Model 1884/98, was introduced in 1915, and was known as the S 84/98 nA (“Seitengewehr 84/98 neuer Art,” or, Bayonet ‘84/‘98 new Pattern).
Made of wood and steel, this bayonet is in EXCELLENT used condition! Manufactured by Gottlieb Hammerfahr Solingen, Foche, there are some slight arks and wear due to the age, but nothing that detracts. Appears to have been painted black during the war at some time. Featuring light brown wood grips, it is stamped with their trademark “Cross Inside a Pyramid” logo, and is marked:
GOTTLIEB
HAMMERSFAHR
SOLINGEN FOCHE
The other side of the blade is faintly stamped with the logo of a Mounted Knight, and the wording, “BAYARD”. This represent the maker, “Pieper of Liège” in Belgium, indicating they supplied the blade. The spine is marked: with the Imperial Crown over a “W” (representing Kaiser Wilhelm II), and a “17” indicating the production date of 1917. Blade has not been sharpened, and still retains the original factory edge. The scabbard is original to the blade, and retains 80% of the original wartime applied black paint. Some marks and scratches throughout, as you can see in the photos. Overall a SUPERB bayonet, PERFECT for any collection or display!
