Description

You are bidding on a VERY RARE set of WW2 German Imperial Navy Kaiserlichemarine 6×30 “Marineglas” Binoculars!  These were brought back by US veteran at the end of the war. 

 

 The German Army used a wide variety of optical equipment, including a 6×30 (6 power magnification with 30mm objective lens, being the standard issued optics used by all branches of service).  Though this type was the standard, specialized personnel required stronger optics (such as this 10×50), and were issues to personnel on a limited basis.

The Zeiss “Marineglas” is the military version of the civilian Silvamar model, with similar characteristics. It is the first binocular model with 30mm lenses. The device turned out to be very successful, with high aperture ratio, plasticity and large field of view, that is why it became popular in the army. Although the name of this device is translated as the “sea glass”, it was not widely used in the German Navy: only some batches entered the fleet. The Marineglas was produced from 1907/08 and up to 1917 with various modifications. Later the binocular name was changed to D.F.6×30.

Made by Carl Zeiss Jena of a large tooled alloy and aluminum construction, these 6×30 power binoculars are in EXCELLENT used condition!  The lens bodies retain about 95% of their original, rough textured, black finish.  The aluminum end piece fittings retain about 95% of their original finish, as well as the bakelite eye cups.  Some slight chips and wear, but nothing that takes away from the overall appearance.  The focus adjustments still function perfectly on both eye pieces and the optics are still VERY clear with NO spotting!  The body is well marked with the impressed designation, “MARINEGLAS 6x”; the serial number, “521057”, and a prominent “Carl Zeiss Jena” Logo.  The BEAUTIFUL feature is that it still retains the original rain shield and neck strap!

The case is original to this set, and has a Weimar Eagle inspection stamp, and a capital “I” on the top.  it is manufactured by Rodenstock.  NO dates that I can see.  Closure is missing/broken as you can see in the photos.  Some wear, as you can see in the photos.  A PERFECT early example, would make a great addition to any collection!.
