Description
You are bidding on a FANTASTIC and RARE example of a FIRST MODEL WW2 German Luftwaffe Nitsche und Günther Splinter-Proof Goggles (Schutzbrille), Fl. 30550! Obtained directly from the estate of Oberfeldwebel Josef Klein, these were used by many fighter and bomber pilots throughout the late stages of the war.
Development of flight goggles began with the advent of military aircraft during WW1. In the early 1930’s the German firm, “Nitsche & Günther” designed splinter goggles that were based on a pattern that was originally developed by the British firm “Triplex”. During WW2, the Luftwaffe used a wide variety of protective goggles, which all followed the same basic design. Originally this type of goggle came in a single piece frame with clear lenses (similar to sunglasses), however as of 1942, tinted lenses were introduced, and finally in 1944, came the latest model, featuring a 3-piece frame with adjustable nose bridge.Oberfeldwebel Josef Klein was a bomber pilot with 1.(F)/100 (1. Fernaufklarungsgruppe 100), and few the Ju88 (amongst other aircraft). Though I know he served on the Eastern Front (Smolensk), sadly, I do not have any further information.
This set of Nitsche und Günther Flight goggles is in EXCELLENT used condition! Obtained from the estate of Oberfeldwebel Josef Klein, they are in SUPERB used condition! The frames are made of bakelite, are in EXCELLENT condition, with some slight scratches and wear, due to the age. The lenses also show NO damage or major scratches! The elastic straps are still solid, however most of the elasticity is gone, due to the age. Some dirt and dust from storage, but that could easily be cleaned up. Comes with an original portrait photo of Klein. One of the RAREST goggle variants to obtain, it would make for an AMAZING addition to any collection or display!
