Description
The Legion Condor was a unit composed of military personnel from the Heer and Luftwaffe, who served during the Spanish Civil War of July 1936 to March 1939. The Condor Legion developed methods of strategic bombing that were shortly afterward used widely during the Second World War. The bombing of Guernica was the most infamous operation carried out by the Condor Legion. Hugo Sperrle commanded the unit’s aircraft formations and Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma commanded the ground elements. Flak Battalion F.88 was commander by Major Dr. Günther Kretschmann, with most units being equipped with the 8,8cm FlaK 18. 5./F.88 was commanded by Oberleutnant Willi Wehla, and equipped wtih the 2cm FlaK 30.
Made of a stamped alloy, this is a FANTASTIC example! It depicts a Legion Condor Banner above a 1st Pattern Luftwaffe Adler. It is marked to “5. F.88”. The country of Spain is show in the center, along with a 20mm FlaK 30 Cannon. It features a stamped dedication for the dates 1936-1938. The corner is engraved with the name “Otto B. Löbig, Cartegena”, who is probably the artist. A few nail holes throughout, but nothing that detracts. Some marks and wear, due to the age, but nothing that detracts. Measures approx. 6″ x 8″ in size, it would make a PERFECT addition to any collection, or display! Please email me if you need additional photos or information. |
