Description
During WW1, most pilots quickly realized the need for protective headgear due to the cold weather effects while in an open cockpit. As no headgear was readily available, pilots were forced to utilize commercially produced leather motorcycle and automobile helmets. During WW2, the German military produced approx. 10 variations of flight helmets for various operational conditions, as well as with or without radio communication equipment.
This fur lined leather helmet (like its summer equivalent, the FK34) was constructed of the same basic pattern as the LKpW100, but without provision for communication. It was equipped with attachment hooks for two- and three-strap oxygen masks.
Manufactured from the 1939 to 1943 it was used in both basic training; as well as in combat aircraft where attaching to the main radio communication equipment was not necessary.
Made of leather and fleece, this helmet is VERY NICE used condition. There are no rips or tears, and the fabric is still very soft and supple. All snaps, tabs, and buckles work correctly, and there is only slight corrosion on the steel fittings. All straps are fully adjustable. It features the manufacture name, “Striegel & Wagner”, and is marked as a size 57. Also features an LBA Stores Stamp on the strap, indicating:
L.B.A. (S) 42
As it is in used condition there is a bit of wear and marks. Upper strap to help retain the oxygen mask is still present. Sadly, the stitching that holds on of the buckles has come loose (see photo), so it is weak in this area. It would need to be re-stitched/attached in order to be functional again. Would make a FANTASTIC and VERY RARE addition to any collection or display!
