Description
You are bidding on a SUPERB and VERY RARE used example of a WW2 USAAF Aircraft Sperry K-9 Upper Turret Computing Gunsight Head! Used in conjunction with the .50 Cal. MG, this was installed in Martin upper gun turrets on the Martin B-26 Marauder and Boeing B-24 Liberator bombers!
Made by Sperry, the K-9 is a computing gunsight used in later Martin Upper Gun Turrets on the B-26 and B-24 bombers. It operates similarly to the Sperry K-3 except that the computer is fixed and gets information from a separate movable sighting head. Essentially, due to the compact size of the Martin Turret, the K-3 was separated into two individual components, consisting of the Sighting Head and Computing Mechanism (I have one in another listing). Essentially, the K-9 is a K-3 separated into two parts.
Made of aluminum, steel, and glass, and dating around 1944, this is an EXCELLENT used example. The ONLY one I have seen of its type, there are some light scratches and wear from storage, however it still retains 95% of its original finish! All parts are original to this sight, and the data plate is 100% intact, clearly indicating the model and type. The single cable shown is also included. I have indicated its location and set-up in the last images. I do have the main computer available in another listing. A VERY RARE item, it would make an EXCELLENT addition to any collection, display, or simply as a conversation piece!
