Description
The Grumman TBF Avenger (designated TBM for aircraft manufactured by General Motors) is an American World War II-era torpedo bomber developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air and naval aviation services around the world. The Avenger entered U.S. service in 1942, and first saw action during the Battle of Midway. Despite the loss of five of the six Avengers on its combat debut, it survived in service to become the most effective submarine killer and most widely-used torpedo bomber of World War II, sharing credit for sinking the super-battleships Yamato and Musashi and being credited for sinking 30 submarines.
Made of aluminum, plexiglass and steel, this windscreen assembly is in SUPERB used condition! It is 100% complete, and all nuts, bolts, screws, and plexi are all 100% authentic and original to this item. Due to the age, there are some minor scratches and marks, but nothing that takes away from the overall appearance. It retains its original camouflage paint on the exterior, as well as the original green cockpit paint/primer on the interior. There is some slight corrosion from storage, but it could easily be cleaned up. The rubber strips that seal the plexi have dried up over time, so those will need to be replaced if one wishes to fly with it. Top vent knob still turns. Overall EXTREMELY solid, but also VERY large! This will have to be transported via freight or similar, due to the size. I can help arrange this with the winning bidder, if needed. I have indicated its location in the last photos. I have NEVER seen another one in this condition become available, and it is most likely a PERFECT airworthy candidate! A SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
