You are bidding on an EXTREMELY RARE example of a WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy Type 4 Flight Navigation Computer! This computer was used by both fighter pilots and navigators throughout the war, in such aircraft as the A6M “Zero”, J2M “Jack”, G2M “Betty”, D3A “Val”, and others!
The user would strap this calculator onto his thigh, just above the knee for easy access. Being the most versatile of all the flight computers, it could also calculate fuel consumption and endurance. It has a frame brace that can be used as a document holder or chart, and also features a 3″ slot on the side that acts as a pencil holder. While opened, the top section properly calculated Time, Speed, Distance and Altitude Pressure/Density. The lower half was used to solve wind problems as well as interception and rendezvous issues. The frosted panel allowed the pilot to write in pencil, and then easily erase after-wards.
Made of a lightweight aluminum alloy, this Flight Computer is in EXCELLENT used condition! Some slight marks, scratches, and wear throughout, but nothing that detracts. Everything is 100% functional, and all knobs work as they should. The strap is original to this unit, and is VERY SOLID, however much of the elasticity has suffered, due to the age (normal). Also retains the original late-war data label affixed to the side (features a very faint Japanese Anchor). These are almost never found on the market today, and like most Japanese items is an EXTREMELY RARE item, perfect for any collection or display!
