You are bidding on a VERY NICE example of an Imperial Japanese Army Type 98 Artificial Horizon! This type was also used in the Ki-45 “Nick”, Ki-44 “Tojo”, Ki-84 “Frank”, Ki-54 “Hickory”, Ki-46 “Dinah”, Ki-67 “Peggy”, and Ki-106!
This instrument measured the current angle of attack by the use of pneumatic air pressure. It was located on the main instrument panel of the Mitsubishi Ki-46, Tachikawa Ki-54 , Nakajima Ki-44, Kawasaki Ki-45, Nakajima Ki 84, Mitsubishi Ki-67, and Tachikawa Ki-106.
Made of aluminum and steel, this piece is of early manufacture, and was removed from a downed Japanese aircraft by a US Serviceman during the war. It features a Type 4 Aluminum Data Plate, indicating the type, manufacture, and production date. The Japanese characters on the front read, “98 Type Artificial Horizon”. It retains 95% of it’s original paint and finish, and the markings still glow when UV light is applied! The locking mechanism still functions smoothly, however the main knob is missing (this could be replaced). Some slight scratches and corrosion due to the age, but still an EXCELLENT example! The only downfall, is that there are some scratched on the blue dial…but this could be rectified if one wished. I have indicated it’s location in the last photos.
Like most Japanese instruments, this gauge is VERY RARE and would be a FANTASTIC addition to any Japanese Instrument Collection!

——————- ABOUT ME —————–
Although my passion is the Me109, I do offer many other German Aircraft (Fw190, Me262, etc.), as well as USAF and Japanese items. Occasionally I do offer many non-vintage items such as prints and art relating to the time period. As a private collector myself, I am constantly on the lookout for historical memorabilia, authentic photographs, artwork or anything unique relating to military aircraft.
