You are bidding on a VERY NICE example of an Imperial Japanese Army Model 1, Type 97 Precise Altimeter, as only used in the Ki-44 “Tojo”, Ki-61 “Tony”, Ki-84 “Frank”, Ki-45 “Nick”, and a few select bombers and trainers!
This instrument measured the current altitude by the use of air pressure. It was located on the main instrument panel of the Nakajima Ki-44, Kawasaki Ki-61, Nakajima Ki-84, Mitsubishi Ki-46, Nakajima Ki-49, Mitsubishi Ki-67, Kawasaki Ki-55, and Tachikawa Ki-54.
Made of aluminum, this AMAZING piece is of late war manufacture, and was taken from a downed Japanese Fighter by a US Serviceman after the war. It still retains 90% of it’s original finish, and the adjustment (millibar) knob functions…but I am not sure if it is functional. It features a late war Type 4 Aluminum Data plate, clearly indicating the model, manufacture, and production number. The numbers and hands still glows when UV light is applied. Sadly, there is a large scratch on the front of the glass…but that could be replaced if one wished. I have indicated it’s location in the last photos.
Like most Japanese instruments, this gauge is VERY RARE and would be a FANTASTIC addition to any Japanese Instrument Collection!
