Description
You are bidding on an AMAZING example of a veteran acquired WW2 German Wehrmacht M31 Afrika Korps Tropical Wood Canteen! This type was specifically used in North Africa and Italy.
The M31 canteen was based on the M1893 and M1907 canteen which were used throughout WW1. These were originally manufactured in aluminum, but as aluminum was required for use in other equipment (aircraft, for example), they were then re-designed to be manufactured in steel as well as wood for Tropical use.
Issued to troops fighting in North Africa, this canteen is in VERY NICE condition for its age. There is no corrosion or damage to the cantenn, and is marked:
D.R.G.M

The wood veneer is in EXCELLENT shape with little wear, and it features the name inscribed into the back. Features a canvas harness system, however, it has suffered from dry rot and has come away in places (it is detached from cap, and about to tear right at the main buckle), so it is in need of restoration/repair. I do have a partial Tropical Canteen Harness listed in another auction that could be used to repair or restore this one. Would make a SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
