Description
You are bidding on a SUPERB and VERY NICE example of a WW2 Steel 500kg Bomb Fragment! This was recovered from the area of the “Obersalzberg” Mountain Retreat, more commonly known as the, “Eagle’s Nest”.
The Obersalzberg was a mountainside retreat situated above the market town of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, Germany. Located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) south-east of Munich, close to the border with Austria, it is best known as the site of AH’s former mountain residence, the Berghof, and of the mountaintop Kehlsteinhaus, popularly known in the English-speaking world as the “Eagle’s Nest”. All of the WW2 era buildings (except the Kehlsteinhaus, which still exists and now serves as a restaurant and tourist attraction) were demolished in the 1950s, but the relevant past of the area is the subject of the Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg museum, which opened in 1999.
On April 25, 1945 an air raid was carried out by the Royal Air Force’s Bomber Command by a large force of 359 heavy bombers from Britain, United States, and Australia. Though it was considered successful, Hitler’s residence and the bunker network were only slightly damaged. Hitler was in Berlin at the time of the attack and Hermann Goring, the only senior Nazi at Obersalzberg, survived.
