You are bidding on a STUNNING and BEAUTIFUL example of a WW2 German Luftwaffe, private-purchase and combat-worn Leather “Greatcoat”! These were used by various officers and NCO’s!
The WW2 German “Greatcoat” was a standard item worn by all ranks (following and original WW1 style). The leather version different from the standard type, as only officers were entitled to wear them. They were responsible for
purchasing their own uniforms (private purchase), and until April 1944, were required to wear slip-on shoulder boards. After this time, no ranks or insignia were required.
Manufactured in heavy-weight brown leather, this RARE private purchase jacket is in AMAZING used condition. 100% original, this is a TEXTBOOK example. Double-breasted in style, it shows combat history, as indicated by the overall wear and condition. This would have been manufactures post April 1944, as no shoulder boards (or loops for the shoulder boards) are present. All the zips are fully functional. As this jacket has seen much combat use, and features wear around the collar and sleeves, as well as the back/bottom of the jacket. The leather is also still quite soft and supple! The interior lining is made of a lighter tan cotton/rayon material, with some wear from daily use. Looks like there is a period field repair as well. Sadly, one of teh hip pocket snaps has come away, but this could be fixed quite easily, if one wished. This is a LARGE size. I am 5’10”, and it is far too big for me…so I would suspect it would fit anyone who wears a large/x-large. Overall an EXCELLENT example with normal surface and interior wear…would make a FANTASTIC addition to any collection or display!
