You are bidding on a SUPERB and VERY RARE example of a WW2 German Luftwaffe 2nd Class Iron Cross! This is the ORIGINAL Iron Cross that was awarded to Major Klaus Mietusch!
The Iron Cross was re-introduced on September 1, 1939 (based on the original 1813 & WW1 Prussian Design), in two distinct classes. The 2nd class award was presented to anyone displaying an act of bravery; the 1st class for anyone displaying 3 or more acts of bravery.
This SPECIFIC 2nd Class Iron Cross originates from the estate of Major Klaus Mietusch. Mietusch served as commander of III./Jagdgeschwader 26, until he was shot down on September 17, 1944 by a P-51 fighter near Aldekerk. He accumulated 75 aerial victories (15 in the East, 59 in the West including the Invasion Front). He was shot down nine previous times and was wounded at least four times. He had logged 452 combat sorties by the time of his death.
Made of a die struck alloy, this Iron Cross is in VERY NICE used condition!! Some slight marks, wear, and tarnishing due to the age, but nothing that detracts. The front features an embossed cross/swastika, along with the date, “1939” at the bottom. The back side recognizes the original institution date, “1813”. No makers marks that I can see. Comes complete with the original ribbon! An AMAZING piece of history, it would make a PERFECT addition to any collection or display!
