Description
You are bidding on an EXTREMELY RARE matched pair of WW2 German Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Me109 series Trim and Flap Control Wheels (Flossenverstellung Handräder)! Installed in the Me109 G thru early K series aircraft, these original cockpit handwheels formed part of the paired mechanical control assemblies mounted on the left side of the cockpit!
The Me109 utilized two large adjacent handwheels on the left side of the cockpit to operate the aircraft’s landing flaps and adjustable horizontal stabilizer trim system. Mounted immediately beside one another, these controls allowed the pilot to mechanically adjust flap position and horizontal stabilizer incidence during takeoff, climb, combat, approach, and landing. Original Messerschmitt documentation for Baugruppe 109.415 illustrates the paired Handräder within the fuselage control installation, together with the associated cable and mechanical linkage system. This earlier pattern utilized metal-spoked wheels fitted with wooden grip rims, while later wartime production increasingly incorporated simplified construction methods as materials and manufacturing requirements changed. The two wheels feature differing wooden rim arrangements, an important original construction detail that also provided additional clearance between the closely spaced controls.
Made of wood, aluminum and steel, this is VERY RARE set of Trim and Flap Control Wheels! Some marks and wear due to the age, however both retain approximately 90–95% of their original RLM 66 cockpit finish! The original wooden rims remain present on both wheels, including the differing factory-style wood arrangement visible between the two examples. There is some slight age-related separation and delamination to portions of the wood, however it remains solid and could be easily stabilized by a competent restorer. One of the wheels has had one of its original spokes deliberately removed at some point in its history. The reason for this modification is unknown, and I have found no documentation explaining whether it was an operational modification, field alteration, or later change. The missing spoke could be professionally recreated if desired. Aside from this alteration, both wheels remain exceptionally complete and retain their original wartime construction, paint, and wood. Everything present is 100% ORIGINAL WW2 German manufacture. I have shown their location in the last images. An EXTREMELY RARE opportunity to acquire an original matched pair of Me109 cockpit trim and flap wheels, ideal for an advanced cockpit restoration, aircraft project, museum display, or Luftwaffe aviation collection!
