Description
You are bidding on a VERY NICE used example of a WW2 German Hitler Youth Hike/Camp Dagger! It comes complete with the original scabbard/frog!
The HJ Knife/Dagger was introduced in early 1933, and was issued to all HJ members regardless of rank. In 1937 a presentation Leader’s dagger was introduced for wear by the ranks of Gefolgschaftsführer to Reichsjugendführer and the camp knife was relegated for wear by the ranks of Hauptgefolgschaftsführer and below. As it was an official NSDAP formation, all uniforms and equipment fell under the authority of the RZM, Reich Zeug Meisterei, (National Equipment Quartermaster).
The RZM, was officially founded in June 1934 in Munich by the NSDAP, as a Reich Hauptamt, (State Central Office), and was based on the earlier SA Quartermaster’s Department. In addition to distributing equipment, the RZM also approved designs, and acted as a quality control supervisor to ensure items manufactured for Party formations met all specifications. Uniforms and equipment produced for the HJ came under the quality control of the RZM and were generally marked by the appropriate RZM approval/acceptance markings. Production of the HJ camp knives was officially discontinued in October 1942.
Made of bakelite and steel, this Hitler Youth Dagger is in GOOD used condition! Clearly marked “RZM M 7/31” (August Merten, Solingen), it is approx. 11” long, with a 6” long blade. It does features some wear and marks due to the age, as well as a chip to the blade, and a broken scale, but is otherwise quite solid! The handle has an imbedded enameled and silver washed alloy HJ emblem on one side.
It comes complete with the original scabbard, that matches the condition of the knife. Still retains 90% of the original paint and finish! Hanger is made of ersatz leather, and affixed with two rivets. Leather does show some slight marks and wear (as well as a split – see photo). Would make a SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
