Description
You are bidding on a VERY RARE example of a WW2 British SOE Type 3 Mark II (B2) Clandestine Suitcase Radio Receiver (RX)! This radio was used by both SOE Agents and Resistance Fighters throughout the war!
Designed in 1942 by Captain John Brown at SOE station IX, and manufactured by the Radio Communications Department at Stonebridge Park. The set was standard issue to both agents and Resistance groups in occupied territories. Unfortunately the B2 was heavy and large, and would often sustain damage when parachuted into enemy territory.
The initial version came in an unobtrusive leather suitcase that allowed an agent to travel inconspicuously. This is the most well-known variant. Later in the war it was dropped by parachute in two water-tight containers, that were more suitable for use by resistance groups operating in the field. The receiver is usually mounted below the transmitter and is the smaller of the two. The entire coverage from 3.1 to 15.2 MHz is divided over three ranges that are selected by the WAVEBAND-selector at the left. To the right of the band-selector is the tuning knob that has two wheels: one for coarse and one for fine tuning. Above the tuning knob is the scale readout that has a magnifying plexiglass lens over it.
Made of aluminum and steel, this is a VERY RARE Radio Receiver! There are some marks and wear throughout due to the age, but nothing that detracts. Apart from the power plug, it appears to be complete both internally and externally. Though it is mechanically functional, I have not tested it electrically, so I am selling this as-is. I have shown its location in the last images. Would make a SUPERB addition to any British Spy Radio collection or display!
