You are bidding on a VERY NICE used example of a WW2 British Royal Air Force Smith’s 8-Day 24-hour MK. IIIB (6A/839) Cockpit Clock! RARER than the more common 12-hour MK. IIIA, this was used in various cockpits such as the early Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, Avro Lancaster, Bristol Beaufort, Bristol Beaufighter, and other Fighters and Bombers!
During World War II, Smith & Sons (MA) produced cockpit chronograph clocks for the RAF. Featuring a 24-hour dial, the 6A/839 was an Jaeger-Le-Coultre 8-day jewelled lever keyless movement with 7.5cm 24-hour black dial, luminous Arabic numerals and subsidiary 12-hour dial which registers the ‘time of trip’.
The high quality movement provides a chronograph action for the time of trip. Two knobs located at 4 & 8 o’clock, control the operation of the clock and there will be a lever for regulating the escapement at the back of the case. The left hand knob acts as the winder (anticlockwise turn) and when pulled out can be used to set the time. The knob at 4 o’clock stops the second hand when depressed and a further press re-sets the second hand.
Made of brass and steel, this Smith’s MK. IIIB (6A/839) Cockpit Clock is in EXCELLENT used condition. It does have some marks, scratches, and wear, due to the age, but it 100% complete. Marked “L 10/39”, this indicates an early production date of 1939, with all part information stamped into the dial. Some of the luminescent paint is missing from some of the numbers, but that is quite common. It comes mounted on a display board the “could” be from some sort of navigator position, but I am not sure. Has an aircraft UV Lamp, as well as a toggle switch mounted on the side. It is 100% FUNCTIONAL, and I have had it running for 7 days. HOWEVER, when the chronograph feature (second hand) is engaged, it will stop after about 5 minutes. This is a result of it not having been lubricated in 80 years. I would have lubricated and rectified this myself, but the mounting screws attaching it to the wood base are EXTREMELY TIGHT. As I did not want to damage the screws myself, I will leave that to the winning bidder to address. NO broken or missing parts from what I can see. A RARE early MK. IIIB, I have shown its location on the Supermarine Spitfire MK.1 (though the more common 12 hour variant) in the last image. Would make an EXCELLENT addition to any collection or display!
