Description
Manufactured for the US Signal Corps by Western Electric in 1915, the SCR-59 was a vital piece of communications gear during the first World War. Compact yet technologically robust, it was capable of receiving voice and code transmissions from other aircraft as well as from troops on the ground. The radio was typically bolted to the side of a WWI fighter plane’s cockpit, with controls that were easily manipulated by the pilot or flight navigator.Though installed in most aircraft, they were quickly deemed obsolete due to their very short range.
Made of wood, brass, and steel by Western Electric, this Aircraft Radio Unit is in SUPERB used condition! Though it is a bit dirty, it retains 95% of it’s original paint! Various marks, scratches and wear due to the age, but nothing that detracts. Clearly marked, “TYPE S.C.R. 59“, it also includes all three radio tubes (Radio Tubes are from the 1930s, however). 100% COMPLETE, but not sure if it is functional, so I am selling this as is. I have shown its location in the DH-4 in the last image. Would make a FANTASTIC addition to any collection or display!
