Description
The M88 ammunition pouch was introduced for the German Gewehr 88 (Kommissionsgewehr) system and represents the transitional equipment of the late 19th century Imperial Army. Unlike later three-pocket pouch designs, this early configuration features a single large body with internal divider inserts designed to retain individual cartridges in organized rows. These pouches were standard issue during the late Imperial period and remained in service into the early years of the First World War. Surviving marked examples from the initial adoption year are increasingly difficult to locate in complete condition.
Made of a dark brown leather, this example remains COMPLETE and structurally sound. The interior divider insert, designed to hold individual cartridges remains present…but is hardened and frozen from age; the material is intact but no longer flexible. Under the flap are what appear to be period unit markings along with a clearly visible “1888” stamp. All stitching is original with NO restitching observed. One closure tab has come away, but it is included, if the winning bidder wished to re-attach it. Buckles and belt loops are original and secure. There are NO tears, loose stitching, rot, cracking, or dryness…however I would always recommend some conditioning, if the winning bidder wishes to use it. The leather retains its original finish with no added oil or dye. Prominent maker stamp on the reverse. A VERY NICE and honest Imperial M88 ammunition pouch in excellent preservation, ideal for early Gewehr 88 or Imperial Army display!
