You are bidding on an EXCELLENT relic example of a WW1 Imperial German Army / Heer Issue 2nd Pattern Grabenpanzer Trench Armor Chest Plate!  This was found in France, along with the M18 Helmet I currently have listed.



Used by Sentries; troops in advanced positions; assault troops; and machine gun troops, the German Chest and Abdomen Trench Armor, was constructed of silicon-nickel steel, and protected against rifle bullets, grenades, and shrapnel.  The hardness was Brinell 360-520, which was MUCH harder than mild steel, and consisted of a breast plate with over the shoulder supports, and three overlapping steel plates attached by fabric fastening straps to protect the stomach and groin.

Used in large numbers between 1916-1917 and in even larger numbers in 1918, General Ludendorff endorsed them as being good for both front and back usage.  Back usage was normal for troops having to endure bombardments and provided significant protection.

 

Made of hardened steel, this is a FANTASTIC relic example!  In barn-find condition, there are some marks, wear, and pitting as you can see in the photos, but nothing that detracts.  Still retains some slight traces of the original paint and finish!  This is the main upper section of the complete assembly.  PERFECT for display or restoration, it would make for an AMAZING addition to any collection!
