Description
You are bidding on a SUPERB example of a WW1 / WW2 German Honour Cross of the World War 1914/1918 for Frontline Combatants, better known to collectors as the Hindenburg Cross! This comes complete with its original fitted case, ribbon, and award document!
The Honour Cross was instituted on 13 July 1934 by Reich President Generalfeldmarschall von Hindenburg as the first official commemorative award of the Third Reich for service connected to the First World War. It was awarded in three versions, for frontline combatants, non-combatants, and next-of-kin, with the combatant version distinguished by the crossed swords through the arms of the cross.
Made of a bronzed metal, this cross remains in STUNNING condition and is housed in its ORIGINAL fitted case embossed on the lid with a Steel Helmet and the dates 1914–1918! This example is the combatant version, awarded to a frontline veteran and still retaining its original period ribbon. The cross retains strong details, and is maker marked, “C.P.” (stamped on the back) which is attributed to Carl Poellath of Schrobenhausen. The ribbon is present and displays the correct combatant colors. The interior of the case contains the original award document issued to Hauptlehrer i.R. Gustav Kaufmann in Ebersberg and dated 22. Feb. 1935. The document reads:
“Im Namen des Führers und Reichskanzlers
Dem
Hauptlehrer i.R. Gustav Kaufmann in Ebersberg
ist auf Grund der Verordnung vom 13. Juli 1934 zur Erinnerung an
den Weltkrieg 1914/1918 das von dem Reichspräsidenten Generalfeld-
marschall von Hindenburg gestiftete
Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer
verliehen worden.”
It is further dated Ebersberg, den 22. Feb. 1935 and signed through the Bayer. Bezirksamt. Overall, this is an EXCELLENT named and cased veteran’s set with VERY NICE display appeal. PERFECT for any collection or display!
