Description

You are bidding on a VERY NICE example of a WW1 British Army Memorial Plaque and Medals!  This commemorated the service of Private Walter Alfred Pike of the Royal Birkshire Regiment.

The Memorial Plaque was issued after the First World War to the next-of-kin of all British Empire service personnel who were killed as a result of the war.

The plaques (which could be described as large plaquettes) about 4.72 inches (120 mm) in diameter, were cast in bronze, and came to be known as the “Dead Man’s Penny”, because of the similarity in appearance to the much smaller penny coin which itself had a diameter of only 1.215 inches (30.9 mm). 1,355,000 plaques were issued, which used a total of 450 tons of bronze, and continued to be issued into the 1930s to commemorate people who died as a consequence of the war.

Made of solid bronze, this Memorial Plaque is in EXCELLENT condition for it’s age.  Commemorating the service of Private Walter Alfred Pike (3456) who died in combat on July 23, 1916.  He served with the 1st & 4th Battalions, Royal Birkshire Regiment.  Over 100 years old, there are some slight wear/marks due to the age, but nothing that detracts.  Comes mounted on a display card, alongside his Royal Birkshire Regiment cap badge and an image from the Thiepval Memorial where he is remembered with honour.  Also included are his original British War Medal & British Allied Victory Medal (both are named to him); and his Ribbon Bar!  Would make a FANTASTIC addition to any collection or display!
