Description
Made by Eastman-Kodak, the Mark 18 is an electrically operated, computing, reflector-type sight designed for use in power turrets. The gunner makes the proper settings on the control units, after which it is only necessary for him to “range and track” the enemy plane, for the sight automatically figures the proper point of aim. It makes no difference whether or not the enemy plane is in a pursuit curve, or whether the gunner is strafing a stationary target. This sight handles all situations equally well. It is not necessary for a gunner to be familiar with the internal construction of the Mark 18. Made of aluminum, steel, and glass, and dating around 1944, this is a VERY NICE example. Though there are some light scratches and wear from storage, it retains 98% of its original finish! All the glass is original to this sight, and includes a flip-up sun shield so that the pilot could see easier when flying in brighter light. Sadly, this appears to have been dropped at some point of time, so the clear reflector glass is missing, and the steel “NO HAND HOLD” shield is broken (see photos). The data plate is 100% intact, and clearly indicates the model and type. Comes complete with the original gyro unit! The original connection line and bulbs are also present. A bit of dust and dirt from storage, but that can easily be rectified by the winning bidder. Comes complete mounted on the original wood transport platform. In near PERFECT NOS condition, it would make an EXCELLENT addition to any collection, display, or simply as a conversation piece!
