Description
During World War II, Waltham, Bulova, and Elgin produced a variety of time pieces to support the war effort. These particular 8 day clocks were used in the cockpits of B-17s and B-29s. Named the A-11, they matched the name of the accompanying wrist watches also used by pilots of the time.
Made of brass and steel, this Elgin AN5743 Cockpit Clock is in EXCELLENT used condition. It does have some marks, scratches, and wear. The RARE feature is the “ELGIN” is written in a bright white on the dial, which I have NEVER seen before (usually it is never printed, or it is subdued)! Currently non-functional, as the balance staff is broken. Should be an easy repair, as the parts are quite common. It is missing one of the small covers at the back, and there are NO broken parts from what I can see..however..I am selling this for parts or repair. The reverse is marked:
ORDER NO. AC- 34898
MFR’S PART NO. 1776
SPEC No. 94-27970 A
AF43 110298
ELGIN NAT’L WATCH CO.
The casing itself is quite good, retaining most of its finish, with some slight signs of wear, but nothing that detracts. Would make an EXCELLent addition to any collection or display!
