Description
You are bidding on an EXTREMELY RARE & BOXED example of a late-war WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy Type 4 Model 3 Gyroscopic Gunsight! A PROTOTYPE design, this was specifically made for use with the A6M Model 52 “Zero” Fighter Aircraft!
Copied from the German Revi C12/D Gunsight, the Japanese Type 4 Model 3 Gunsight was the ONLY Prototype Gyroscopic Gunsight adopted by the Japanese Military. This adjustable Gyroscopic Gunsight automatically adjusted to give the correct lead and range of the target. The pilot would essentially enter the approx. range and wingspan of the target aircraft by adjusting the dial on the side and rear.
Made of aluminum and steel by Tomioka-Kogaku, the PROTOTYPE design dates around 1944/1945, this is an AMAZING boxed example! EASILY the RAREST Gunsight made for the A6M Zero, it retains approx. 95% of it’s original finish with the original bulb! Both original glasses are intact (some chips), as well as the small leather crash pad at the reverse. Some slight paint chips and wear, due to the age, but nothing that detracts. All mechanical adjustments are 100% FUNCTIONAL, however, I have not tested it electrically. The cord is a bit frayed and cracked, but that is normal for Japanese rubber of this age. Data plate is complete and mounted on the side. It indicates a LATE-WAR manufacture date of June, 1945! Also features a simplified fixed sight on the right, in-case sight was damaged electrically in combat. Comes complete in the original wood box, and one spare bulb. Some felt missing inside the box, but that could be replaced, if one wished. In 25 years of collecting, this is the ONLY Gunsight I have ever seen of this type! Being a late-war prototype, I suspect it is the only one in existence, making it EXCEEDINGLY RARE! Would make a SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
