Description
In 1939, the SOLD-Libellen-oktant (SOLD level-octant), made by C Plath, went into service with the Luftwaffe (German Air Force). While it was used extensively by Luftwaffe reconnaissance aircraft, it is less well known that Naval versions appeared, with better protection from salt water spray and a self-contained power source in the form of a rechargeable NIFE battery. The aircraft versions were powered via a flying lead. While the results of observations made with a bubble sextant at sea can be expected to be rather inaccurate, in some circumstances, on war patrol at night for example, or in poor weather when no horizon is visible, even a poor result can be better than none at all. Made of aluminum and steel, this is a SUPERB German Kriegsmarine Sextant in all original condition with its original box AND Instruction Manual! Manufactured by C. Plath of Hamburg, it features the original data label, and dates later in the war, probably between 1944 and 1945. Some slight marks and scratches, but nothing that takes away from the overall appearance. It measures approx. 11.5″ in length, and comes complete in the original box. Also included are 4 extra light bulbs, an eye piece, and other small parts. The electrical plug for night use and the batteries are missing, however. The bubble is 100% present, and it is mechanically functional from what I can tell. I do not know if it is 100% fully operational due to its condition, as I have not tested it. I will leave the full functionality determination to the winning bidder. The box has a few bends and slight damage (possibly dropped at one time), but it is still solid. Comes with the ORIGINAL 1944 dated instruction manual. I have shown the Luftwaffe version in use in the last photos. Would make a FANTASTIC addition to any collection, or display! |
