Description
At the outbreak of WW2, navigator and pilot watches were put into full production. The German government contracted many manufacturers to build pilot chronographs, with the two most popular being Uhrenfabrik AG Tutima of Glashutte, and Hanhart of Schwenningen. Both similar in appearance, several variants were produced. Some variations include a Gold Gilded Movement, and Rotating Bezels with either a red line or arrow. With the chronograph function, the pilot was able to calculate precise time in 30 minute intervals. They were issued according to a pilot’s mission requirements, and when no longer needed (for example if a pilot was injured), they were returned to stores.
The requirements for this watch were black dials for clear visibility, luminous hands, and Arabic numerals. Backs were to be screwed, in order to prevent dirt and moisture from entered the case.
Tutima production began in 1941, and it featured an UROFA 59 calibre movement with 17 jewels. Earlier models also features shock protection.
Made of nickel-plated brass, this Tutima Glashutte Pilot Chronograph is in AMAZING used condition! Fully functional, it is featured on page 366 & 367 of Konrad Knirim’s, “Military Timepieces” book. Though the crystal shows some very light scratches, the dial and hands are in near MINT condition, with NO damage or corrosion! The casing itself is near PERFECT, and retains 95% of the original finish! Note that because I use a camera flash, the scratches show up more pronounced than they actually are in person. The manufacture name is clearly indicated on the dial. The BEAUTIFUL feature is that is still retains the original strap! Usually these wear out quickly from use and are replaced. Strap features and interesting manufacture mark. The serial numbers on the back of the case, as well as on the movement match, indicating, 204172 (which is an early number). Note that the movement has not been serviced in 30 years, so even though it is currently running, I would suggest getting it cleaned/adjusted for daily use/wear. EASILY the nicest one I have owned of its time, it would make a PERFECT addition to any collection or display!
