Description

You are bidding on an AMAZING REPRODUCTION example of a WW2 German Luftwaffe Fieseler Fi-103 V-1 Rocket Compass Hohlkugel (Sphere)!  This wood ball was used on ALL versions of the FZG-76 V-1 “Buzzbomb”!

The V-1 Automatic Pilot consisted of three air-driven gyros (a master gyro and two secondary gyros). The master gyro controls both elevators and rudder through pneumatic servos. The secondary gyros provide damping against oscillations.

The master gyroscope will maintain its axis of rotation in a fixed direction for a long period of time, thus providing a definite fixed direction in the aircraft.  Any deviation from a pre-set course is detected by the gyroscope, witch moves the control surface through the pneumatic servos to correct the deviation.

The gyroscope tends to wander off its initial setting after some time, and, to counter this, a magnetic compass was added inside the nose, surrounded by a wood sphere.  Electrical connections from this compass police the gyros directions in a horizontal plane.

Made of wood, this V-1 Compass Sphere is a near exact copy.  This was originally in the collection of a V-1 re-builder, who made a handful of complete and functional examples for various museums and private collections (using 90% original parts).  There are some marks, scratches, and wear, but nothing that detracts.  EASILY identifiable as from a V-1 Rocket due to the shape, size, and structure. I have indicated it’s location in the last photos.  Would make a SUPERB addition to any collection, display, or restoration project!

————— TERMS OF SALE ————–

Most of my items are vintage, and as such are AS-IS, so you must therefore expect a degree of wear due to age and/or usage. All sales are final, so please make sure your questions are answered to your satisfaction before you purchase.

——————– ABOUT ME —————–

Although my passion is the Me109, I do offer many other German Aircraft (Fw190, Me262, etc.), as well as USAF and Japanese items. Occasionally I do offer many non-vintage items such as prints and art relating to the time period. As a private collector myself, I am constantly on the lookout for historical memorabilia, authentic photographs, artwork or anything unique relating to military aircraft.
