Description
You are bidding on a SUPERB and COMPLETE used example of a German Luftwaffe Behälter für Navigations-Lehr und Übungs (Case & Instruments for Navigational Aid), Fl. 98000, used by almost every Navigator/Radio Operator throughout the war! This originally belonged to Luftkriegsschule 4 (LKS 4), which was based at the Fürstenfeldbruck Airfield.
This is a nearly navigation set, produced in 1942. It allowed the pilot or navigator to correctly calculate the aircraft’s flight path using various maps, calculators, outside air temperature, path, speed, and current climb/decent.Fürstenfeldbruck became famous as the main training base for the German Luftwaffe during the war .The Air Base was established in 1935, and was the Luftkriegsschule 4 (LKS 4—4th Air War School) of the Luftwaffe. Field Marshal Hermann Göring is said to have taken a deep personal interest in establishing an air force training base for the Luftwaffe and modeled Fürstenfeldbruck after the United States Army Air Forces training center at Randolph Field, Texas. The RAF and USAAF understood that Fürstenfeldbruck was being used extensively as a training base, and believed it to be of little strategic importance. Consequently, it escaped bombing until the later stages of the war, and then it was attacked severely.Allied bombing began to desolate many German cities in 1944 and in October the Luftwaffe leaders rushed work to extend the air base’s runways long enough for fighter aircraft takeoffs. Fifty direct hits were made on the field the afternoon of 9 April 1945 when 338 B-17s of the 1st Air Division, Eighth Air Force, unleashed 867 tons of bombs on the runways, hangars, repair shops, and other facilities.
Made of steel, plastic and aluminum, this navigational set is in EXCELLENT condition for it’s age! It clearly shows part number Fl. 98000, the description, as well as all manufacture information on the main data plate. 100% COMPLETE, a stamp describing the contents is affixed to the inside, and indicates:
Though some item are still wrapped in their original factory plastic, one pencil and the eraser have been used (probably used by a veteran post-war). I should have an original UNUSED eraser in storage, which I will include with the sale. Also includes, “Merkblatt 201”, which is stamped with an LKS4 Property Marking. The leather carry-handle is still present (this is usually missing), however it does have a repair. 100% FUNCTIONAL it is EASILY one of the NICEST sets I have seen! It retains 95% of it’s original finish and would make a PERFECT addition to any collection or display!
