Description

You are bidding on a SUPERB and 100% original WW2 German Luftwaffe autographed postcard photo of General Eduard Dietl!  Unlike most of the autographs you see, this is a WARTIME signed photo postcard (not post-war).

Eduard Dietl (21 July 1890 – 23 June 1944) was a German general during World War II who commanded the 20th Mountain Army. He was a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords of Nazi Germany.

Dietl was sent to Finland designated to be the “Hero in the snow” (to be a counterpart to Rommel who would be the “Hero in the sun”, also given a secondary theater leaving the main stage to Hitler). One of AH’s favorite generals, he was the first German soldier to receive, on 19 June 1940, the oak leaves cluster to the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. Dietl was also popular among his men and his Finnish allies.

On 23 June 1944, the Ju 52 aircraft carrying Dietl, General der Infanterie Thomas-Emil von Wickede, General der Gebirgstruppe Karl Eglseer, Generalleutnant der Gebirgstruppe Franz Rossi and three other passengers crashed in the vicinity of the small village of Rettenegg, Styria.  There were no survivors.

Until 1997, the municipality of Ringelai in the Bavarian Forest honored Dietl with a memorial plaque. Until 1977, this site had honored Albert Leo Schlageter instead.  Freyung honored Dietl with a General-Dietl-Straße.

Made of heavy card, this postcard is in EXCELLENT condition!  Featuring a photographic image of  Eduard Dietl, it is signed in ink.  Some marks and wear due to the age on the reverse, but nothing that detracts.  100% original, it would look EXCELLENT framed!  A PERFECT addition to any collection or display!
