Description
You are bidding on an EXCELLENT used example of a WW2 German Luftwaffe LKpW101 Fliegerkopfhaube fur Winter mit FT-Gerat (Winter Flight Helmet with Communication Equipment), Ln. 26618, as used by many German pilots and flight crew! During WW1, most pilots quickly realized the need for protective headgear due to the cold weather effects while in an open cockpit. As no headgear was readily available, pilots were forced to utilize commercially produced leather motorcycle and automobile helmets. During WW2, the German military produced approx. 10 variations of flight helmets for various operational conditions, as well as with or without radio communication equipment. This specific helmet was designed with radio equipment for fighter and bomber pilots. It was similar to the earlier model used in the early months of the Battle of Britain (LWpW100), however with updated features. Made of leather and fleece, this helmet is in EXCELLENT used condition. There are no rips or tears, and the leather is still very soft and supple! All snaps, tabs, and buckles work correctly, and retain their original paint. All the electrics are 100% intact (headphones, throat mic), as well as the main radio plug and wiring. All straps are fully adjustable. The interesting feature is that the earphones are a lighter color of brown than the rest of the helmet. Data label is complete, and indicates a size 58. The cellophane covers for the ear phones are also still present. Acquired from another collector’s estate, this was originally part of the US Army Technical Research Laboratory and Foundry (as with some of the other helmets I have listed). The photos are official US Army photographs, and come with the hlemt. A SUPERB example, perfect for any collection or display!
