You are bidding on a VERY NICE use example of a WW2 German Luftwaffe Issue Map Case as used by the German military throughout WW2! This SPECIFIC case originally belonged to a member of Aufkl. Gr. 24., however I do not have any further history.
Map cases were issued on a limited basis to specifically designated personnel such as unit commanders, pilots, and observers. The M35 map/dispatch case was based on the Weimar era, Reichsheer pattern map/dispatch case with minor variations. The M35 map/dispatch case underwent a front closure modification in mid-1936, and an additional small front pocket was added in 1938, although the early pattern cases continued to be manufactured through-out the war.
Made of a light brown, pebbled leather, this first pattern M35 map case is in EXCELLENT used condition! It features a fold-over top flap with a vertical closure strap, as well as various pockets for a ruler, pencils, and various other map accessories. The rear has two vertical belt loop straps and buckles. Interior has two compartments with a central leather separator. Though I cannot see a date, it does features a VERY CLEAR Luftwaffe stamp indicating:
Right below the LBA stamp is a unit stamp indicating:
This unit was a reconnaissance unit that flew the Do17 throughout the entire war (was re-named in 1938 to Aufklarungsgruppe 22). There does appear to be a name inscribed in the back as well…but it is not legible. The leather is VERY SOFT, but as you can see in the photos, features some wear and marks. Sadly, the main closure clip has broken away…but it coul be repaired if one wished. Also, one of the rear tabs that secures the strap (see pic) has come also away. A VERY NICE combat used example, with specific unit history, it measures approx. 8″ x 10″ in size. Would make a PERFECT addition to any collection or display!!
