Description
You are bidding on a VERY RARE set of WW2 British RAF MK. II Survival Rocket Kites! These were used by both fighter and bomber pilots throughout the war! Similar to the US M-357 Emergency Box Kite, these emergency British Kites were raised from a Dinghy in survival situations. The complete emergency radio kit originally included a balloon and hydrogen generator as an alternate to the kite…however…in 1943, the RAF changed the box kite to a Conyne design, which could be rocket launched from the dinghy via a signal/flare pistol. Made of wood, brass, aluminum, steel, and fabric, this is an EXTREMELY rare set (I only know of one other that is with the Imperial War Museum). A complete boxed set of 3, this was probably stored inside a bomber aircraft, due to the size. There are some marks and wear throughout, due to the age, but nothing that detracts. All kites are complete, and are still rolled/wrapped (see photos). Loads of ink stamps throughout, including a manufacture/inspection date of 1943. The instruction label on the outside of the box has mainly worn away, but much is still legible. Fairly sure the carrying strap is a post-ware replacement. Normally the inside would contain the flare pistol and flares, however those are missing. Otherwise it is unused and appears to be complete Would make a SUPERB addition to any RAF Radio collection or display! Please email me if you need additional photos or information.
