You are bidding on a SUPERB used example of a Spanish / Indian War US Army Brass & Leather Bayonet Hanger! This was used SPECIFICALLY in conjunction with the Springfield Model 1830 “Trapdoor” rifle!
The Springfield Model 1873 was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army (although the Springfield Model 1866 had seen limited issue to troops along the Bozeman Trail in 1867). The rifle, in both full-length and carbine versions, was widely used in subsequent battles against Native Americans. The Model 1873 was the fifth variation of the Allin trapdoor design, and was named for its hinged breechblock, which opened like a trapdoor. The infantry rifle model featured a 325/8-inch (829 mm) barrel, while the cavalry carbine used a 22-inch (560 mm) barrel. It was superseded by an improved model, the Springfield Model 1884, also in .45-70 caliber.
Made of brass leather, this Bayonet Frog/Hanger is in VERY NICE used condition! Being over 150 years old, there are some marks, wear, and stains due to the age, and the leather is a bit stiff from being in storage. Should just need a bit of leather conditioning. No maker markings that I can see. Would make a SUPERB addition to any collection or display!
