You are bidding on a SUPERB and VERY RARE used example of a German Bundesmarine Driver Position Submarine Control Station! This was SPECIFIC to the post-war Type 201 and Type 205 U-Boats! Produced by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), Kiel, Germany…only 13 of these Submarines were made…and all by 3 were scrapped…so I am not really sure how this made it to the USA.
The Type 201 was Germany’s first class of military submarines built after World War II. They were built out of amagnetic steel to counter the threat of magnetic naval mines, but the material had been insufficiently tested and proved to be problematic in service with the Bundesmarine. Microscopic cracks in the pressure hull forced the cancellation of 9 of the 12 ordered submarines and the early retirement of the three completed boats. They were replaced by the very similar Type 205 submarines, which were constructed with normal steel.
The Type 205 was a class of German diesel-electric submarines. They were single-hull vessels optimized for the use in the shallow Baltic Sea. The Type 205 is a direct evolution of the Type 201 class with lengthened hull, new machinery and sensors. The biggest difference though is that ST-52 steel is used for the pressure hull since the Type 201’s non-magnetic steel proved to be problematic. Type 206, the follow-on class, finally succeeded with non-magnetic steel hulls.
Made of brass, aluminum, and steel, this Driver Station is an AMAZING piece of history! Quite primitive looking, I am not sure if this is from a Type 201 or Type 205. As you can see in the photos, it was torch cut DIRECTLY from the driver position, and AMAZINGLY is still attached to the original floor! Though it is not 100% complete, almost all lines and fitting remain, as well as all the original German labeling. Also retains most of the original paint and finish! Due to the age, there are some dents and marks (normal due to the age), however it is still VERY SOLID! I have shown an interior photo from one of the 3 surviving Type 205 U-Boats. As the design is slightly different, I believe this is from one of the early models, or possibly the Type 201. eBay only allows 12 photos, but more photos can be seen on my other page. Due to the size and weight, I will not be able to pack and ship this…as such, the buyer will need to arrange shipping / collection, or pick-up locally. Would look FANTASTIC in a man-cave or bar setting!! An EXTREMELY RARE piece of history, it would make a FANTASTIC addition to any collection or display!
